Archaeological
Consultants of the Carolinas, Inc. (ACC) conducted archaeological
investigations of the
Cypress River Plantation tract in Horry County, South Carolina. The
182 hectare tract is located at the intersection of Enterprise and Bay roads,
approximately 8 km west of the town of Socastee. The tract borders the Waccamaw
River on the northwest and residential subdivisions and a golf course on
the southeast. Bay Road forms the northeast boundary, and the marsh associated
with the river stretches along the southwestern edge of the tract. The survey
identified 19 archaeological sites and 13 isolated finds. Five of the sites
required additional testing, with two of those sites (38HR490 and 38HR496)
determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
(Reid et al. 2004). Data Recovery investigations were conducted for both
38HR490 and 38HR496. This report discusses the Phase III data recovery investigations
at site 38HR496.
